One Of A Kind

As each piece is unique, since wood is a natural product, your board is also unique. Nature is temperamental, it draws the grain of each strip of wood that is chosen and assembled to form your board. Each board is the result of years of work on the part of Mother Nature and a few hours on my part.

Please note that every effort is made to ensure that the photographs are as representative as possible of the plates.

Wood

Let’s start at the beginning! Wood is a natural product. This means that mother nature has endowed it with a beautiful design, but also with somewhat temperamental natural features. The wood does indeed work. By this we do not mean that it earns its bread, but that it shrinks or expands under the effect of humidity and temperature. It is simply a living material that can crack and split. In addition to the fact that a crack or crack is unsightly, it can also harbor bacteria, which should be avoided at all costs.

After using a wooden board, it is best to rinse and clean it with a dish brush or cloth. It is not always necessary to use dishwashing liquid, but it is recommended to do so after cutting raw meat or fish. Be sure to wipe the board thoroughly. If you store it wet, the wood may work. The hard work of a cutting board may be admirable, but it is better for it to be quiet. Once dried, store it upright preferably. It is important that the grain of the wood is vertical. This reduces the risk of warping.

Oiling a wood Board

A wooden cutting board needs to be cleaned, but it’s also important to keep it in tip-top condition. A little oil works wonders. Soaked in oil, the wood closes to form a protective layer. To oil a wooden cutting board, it is best to use an odorless and tasteless oil. White mineral oil is fine, but we recommend using a cutting board oil. Do not use olive oil, it makes the board sticky and dirty, which is not the desired result.

Antibacterial power

It is sometimes said that wooden cutting boards are unhygienic. However, this is not true. By dint of cutting on the board, it scratches and bacteria lodge in the cuts. On a plastic board, the notch closes (partially) around the dirt. When washing the board, you may not eliminate all the bacteria. On a wooden board, on the other hand, the notch does not close around the dirt and it is therefore released during cleaning. All dirt is therefore removed in the wash. In addition, the wood contains tannin that helps kill many of the bacteria.

  • NEVER LEAVE SUBMERGED IN WATER FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME
  • NEVER PUT IN THE DISHWASHER
  • Avoid placing hot dishes, cans, and pieces of metal (such as a cheese grater) on the wood, which can leave dark circles.

Solutions to Problems

Whether you’ve owned a Butcher’s Board or Block for a long time or you’ve just made an investment in it, here are some tips.

Changes in temperature and humidity due to seasonal changes can cause slight changes in the volume of the wood. While these are not damaging to Butcher’s Blocks, we do need to take some precautions.

During the winter period, the heating of houses leads to a decrease in the ambient humidity level and the wood can tend to dry out, while in summer the humidity level increases and the wood expands. It is therefore important not to place your Planks and Butcher Block near heat sources. In order to protect the wood and keep the degree of humidity constant, it is therefore essential to treat it with a good oil and, if necessary, a wax to avoid cracking or fill the cracks if necessary to avoid the development of bacteria.

By taking good care of your board or your Butcher’s Block, it will give it back to you for at least ten years.
